2013 Team Previews: Caterham and Marussia

Caterham
Drivers: Charles Pic, Giedo van der Garde

2012 Constructors position: 10th
2012 Driver position: Pic 21st (driving for Marussia), Van der Garde (rookie)

Caterham began 2012 with optimism believing that they would be the first of the new teams to break into the points. For the majority of 2012 this appeared impossible with both drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov both only having best finishes of 13th place. But at the final race of the 2012 season, a chaotic Brazilian Grand Prix saw Petrov finish 11th, just outside the top ten and helped secure 10th place in the constructors for Caterham. Having finished 10th the team may have the funds to improve on 2012 but with the midfield being so competitive it may still be some time before the team can catch and compete with these teams.

2013 will see Charles Pic join the team from Marussia bringing some backing with him and his talent. Alongside him Giedo van der Garde will be joining the team meaning the team will have two new drivers for 2013. The two drivers are both competitive but Pic’s year of driving in F1 should help him to have the better of his teammate. The team will hope to be closer to the midfield and challenge for some points, but they may need an unpredictable race such as Brazil 2012 to have any chance.

Pre-season testing has indicated that the team is behind Marussia and with their backmaker rivals strong lineup they may struggle to beat Marussia in the championship.

Predicted 2013 Constructors position: 11th

Marussia
Drivers: Max Chilton, Jules Bianchi

2012 Constructors position: 11th
2012 Driver position: Chilton (rookie), Bianchi (rookie)

Marussia began 2012 with the aim to beat their backmarker rivals Caterham however both Timo Glock and Charles Pic failed to manage this. Good results in Singapore (Glock 12th) and Brazil (Pic 12th) were not enough to overhaul Caterham for 10th in the constructors championship. Glock failed to finish one Grand Prix and Pic failed to finish five in 2012. The team will need solid development to have a chance of beating Caterham and point scoring may still be far off in the distance.

2013 sees Marussia with two new drivers in the shape of Max Chilton and Jules Bianchi. Bianchi was a late change to the line up with Marussia having signed Luiz Razia before terminating his contract and signing Bianchi after he lost out on the Force India seat. Both drivers are capable of achieving good results and given the machinery should be able to challenge Caterham.

Pre-season testing has shown the team to have made progress and they look to be ahead of their backmarker rivals Caterham.

Predicted 2013 Constructors position: 10th
